Dewalt Router Collet Upgrade

I’ve started a project that requires micro drills and micro endmills. Some of the bits I purchased had shank sizes that necessitated purchasing a new collet so I decided to try these out. Precision Collet

I’m not sure I needed to go this far with precision oriented bits considering the Dewalt runout might negate any gains. I’ve previously purchased collets from Elaire and have been satisfied with them so far.

Any thoughts on collets and Dewalt/Makita routers. Do they benefit from this kind of upgrade at all?

Collet set from PreciseBits arrived yesterday. I have tested it yet, but I really like the look! Dewalt, Elaire, PreciseBit, collets from left to right respectively. DSC_0617|690x460

The collet snugs up the bit by hand nicely prior to wrenching it down. Solves the problem of bits falling in/out during tool change.

I ordered a Bosch 1617EVS and was poking around at the reviews and found this. Not sure what to say other than wow!

I ended up going this way myself after ruining an elaire collet. Not cheap but I’ve been very happy with them. I have both the 1/4" and 1/8". The wrench and teeth make a very good purchase for tightening. Spendy especially for canada but great stuff, and their bits have also been excellent.

I agree, well worth it.

The video is pretty impressive. Much more than I need currently but it’s one less thing to worry about. I should be clear too aside from my own destructive behavior that led to my elaire being problematic I didn’t have any cause for concern with it either.

I’ve communicated with Precise Bits regarding metric collets for the Bosch compatible series. They don’t make metric anymore but gave me this information after testing their imperial collets with metric bits. Thought it would be useful for some of the folks here that use their collets. What I’ve gleened from their test is that anything metric within 0.5mm of the imperial collet is likely to work.

Hi,

I just tested 3mm, 4mm and 6mm shanks. The results:

** 3mm shank in 1/8" collet - very tight clamping OK*
** 4mm shank in a 3/16" collet - did not work. threads on nut bottomed out before clamping NO*
** 6mm shank in 1/4" collet - very tight clamping OK*

We initially made some metric collet for the router families that we support but they did not prove to be very popular. We did not produce more once the initial batches sold out.

Please let me know if you need any more information.

My best regards,
Ron Reed
