Z axis not at right height (way too high)

Trying to engrave grid lines on my spoiler board…every time I place the bit kissing the spoiler & run the job it retracts moves to the starting point but doesn’t reach low enough to actually cut anything!!! I’ve tried the touch probe and that thing only makes one side of the x axis fall

Most likely, your bit is moving up because a G92 Z0 is not being executed. If you electronically move the bit down to touch the spoil board, you will be at a negative Z value in Marlin. Your g-code is likely moving to Z=0, which raises the bit and cuts in the air. A G92 Z0 before executing your g-code file will set the current Z position to zero. You may also want to set X and Y to zero, so G92 X0 Y0 Z0. There are multiple ways to execute a G92 including menus and having them automatically inserted in the g-code. We would need to know what control board, display, CAD, and CAM you are using to explain and make a recommendation.

What firmware are you using and on what control board? What touch probe command are you using and from where? Do both steppers function when moving the Z axis up and down electronically? The LowRider homes up, and uses G38.2 to probe down to the touch plate. Your scenario is strange for standard V1 firmware with endstops correctly installed.

I’m using fusion 360 with flyfisher post processor with an skr pro 1.2 running dual endstops firmware using G32 which is in the post processor. I have the tiny touch plate and both Z motors are working

So, the issue is not G92 since I see one in this file. It appears to be a CAM authoring problem though I cannot be sure since you cut the file off too soon. I need to see the height it starts cutting, and it appears you cut the file off before the plunge is complete. You probably picked the wrong stock point in your CAM setup. If so, your CAM believes the surface of your stock is above your spoil board.

Puzzling. According to the Marlin g-code reference, G32 is “Undock Sled.” I’ve never seen this g-code used before, but I suspect all it does is turn off the Z stepper. It probably doesn’t turn off the second one since that is E0 or E1, not Z. I don’t have your setup, but I believe there is a touch plate command in the menu on your display. I’m not sure, but I don’t think that command takes into account the thickness of the touch plate.

Looking at the g-code, the lowest Z goes is 4.134, so this is definitely a CAM authoring issue. If you want to save your Fusion 360 file to your local disk, put it in a ZIP file and upload it, I can tell you why it is milling high. As mentioned before, it is likely you use the “wrong” stock point in your CAM Setup.

Edit: Your post of your g-code file disappeared. Strange. Usually there is a “deleted post” at least.

The file looks fine, and for me, the g-code it generates is also fine. I don’t see the 4.134 for Z I do in the file you posted above. Are you sure you selected the right post processor? Did you change anything between the time you posted above and provided the Fusion 360 file?

I’m not any kind of Fusion 360 expert, but if I wanted to route gridlines with a chamfer bit, I would use a 2D/Trace toolpath. I would set the Passes/Axial Offset to the depth I wanted the tip to carve…say -1mm. This produces a much simpler/cleaner toolpath.

If you have not surfaced your spoil board, expect your routed lines to be uneven, or even missing in places. Carving with a chamfer bit is highly sensitive to variations in surface height.

I did it from another computer so that post processor on my desktop might be what’s wrong with it. But I also took your advice and changed it to a 2d trace toolpath. I haven’t surfaced yet due to the fact I want to use a sacrificial spoilerboard on top of the mdf board I have just want to make the grid so it’s easy to get the board on top square.

Here is what I did (which doesn’t imply at all what you should do).

  • sized my spoil board to be slightly smaller than my working area.
  • homed my router, and then placed the corner of the spoil board just inside the working area.
  • nailed a finishing nail near the home/origin corner of my spoil board.
  • placed a chamfer bit in the router and aligned the tip with the bottom edge of the spoil board centered on the nail.
  • moved the router to the opposite end of the X axis.
  • rotated the spoil board to align bottom edge with the tip of the chamfer bit.
  • Screwed the spoil board down.

By having the spoil board sitting on top of the base board, and having it smaller than working size, I don’t have a pit/depression when I surface the spoil board. This allows me to mill oversized stock without having to deal with the depression. Also, If I ever want a more accurate alignment, I can mill the edges of my spoil board…or at least min X and Y.
