This thing hates me...

OK, so I got smart, and bought a cheap whiteboard and fine tip markers.

I was able to get the crown to draw pretty well!

Then suddenly my LCD screen went crazy, full of odd characters. I thought, OK, just reboot.

I pulled the power, and rebooted. Everything seemed fine, X and Y jogged into place but Z wouldn’t move.

I pulled the power again, and swapped Z and Y, to attempt to figure out if it was physical, or the board not sending the commands.

After that NONE of the axis would move, and I noticed that the mini-Rambo board was getting really hot.

I pulled the power and decided to call it a night, hoping that it works after it cools off.

 

Any suggestions on what to try when I get home to work on it again?

Start with a fresh firmware flash.

What mini LCD and what changes did you make, to what base firmware…What steppers, anything else?

And it’s the reprap discount LCD display. Only change to the FW was to enable that and disable the Full graphic one.

Still not home yet, and I know from my own support life… that you just want me to follow directions while you think it out… but I’ve gotta know… what will pics of the board show?

Well, I finally got down here, and the damn PC is running the creators update! So here’s the wiring. The board is heating up again.

Where does it get hot? The stepper drivers do dissipate all of there heat through the copper in the board, they will be hot and the board will get warm. To test if this is the problem, reset the board and do not touch it, do not engage the steppers. It should stay cold.

Once you move the drivers they stay engaged and hot/warm for 6 minutes or unless you disengage them in the menu. So having the heat dissipating side of the board sitting on cloth is a bad idea and you are keeping it nice and cozy and holding in the heat. If you look all those tiny holes are heat pipes between the layers from the hot side of the drivers.

It’s usually resting on the cold tile floor here. It’s the black chip in the middle that’s getting hot. Can’t touch it more than a split second.

I’m finally on my PC and reflashing now.

Unplug the LCD and make sure you flash my stock firmware. If it still gets hot send it back and let me have a look.

And your arduino ide looks to be too old, it’s not from the windows app store is it? If it is try the one directly from arduino.
